Madhur Bhandarkar's Fashion seems to be made from the same cloth as Page 3. It's just a sequel of the same film, like Corporate or Traffic Signal were.
Fashion, well, is set around the fashion industry. And of course there is not even a mention of clothes, designers, their works and the industry itself. The only thing we learn is that there is something called a show-stopper.
Show-stopper is a word for a top-model who is the last to walk in the ramp at any fashion show. Everyone wants to be a show-stopper. And according to this film, only one man can make this happen. He is the owner of a modeling placement agency.
The entire industry has all about two fashion designers. There is space for only one super-model. So you get the fuzzy picture here.
The other word you learn or actually you already know is the typical Bombay slang called "struggler". Now to the best of my knowledge Chandigarh has the highest per capita income in India. It's about Rs 90,000 per annum. It's also the capital of two states and a union territory. I wouldn't exactly call this modern city a small town, as this film does. But Chandigarh is Priyanka Chopra's character comes from.
She is a small town girl with big dreams. She does make it, by becoming the mistress of the modeling agency head. She easily displaces the current champion, that's played by Kangana Ranaut.
Like Kangana's character, Priyanka's super-model falls into a life of sex, drugs, alcohol and arrogance. The other model in this group marries a gay designer. Thank you very much.
My favourite scene from the film is actually when the director of the movie himself appears at a party. One of the models looking at him says, "Oh that's Madhur Bhandarkar, the realistic filmmaker. Now he is going to expose the fashion world." This is when you realise how seriously the director takes himself.
Now every film is supposed to have a setting. Just because some mainstream Bollywood movies are set nowhere, it doesn't mean that merely having a setting is such a big thing. The main problem with Bhandarkar's Corporate is that it wasn't Corporate. Just like the problem with Fashion is that it isn't about fashion either.
Basically the movie perpetuates every myth and misconception you may have had about these decadent pretty young things or immoral models that you watch on billboards and television. For a film that claims to be realistic that's really quite a shame.
